Celebrating 150 Years!
St. Wenceslaus and the
Community of Spillville
A Message from Father Donald Hawes
Dear Friends,
We celebrate the history of a people of faith. The early settlers within a few years of arrival in this area built St. Wenceslaus Church in 1860. They brought with them building skills when they left home overseas and came to America. The beautiful church we have today is a tribute to their faith in God and to their workmanship. We remember them and the lives of generations succeeding them.
We remember the Bily Brothers and Antonin Dvorak. To this day many come to Spillville to visit the Bily Clocks and St. Wenceslaus Church and cemetery. Frequent requests are received for the opportunity to see and/or photograph the church organ, which was played by the great musician. It is said as he sat at the organ and expressed his joy with the hymn “Lord, Before Thy Majesty”.
Through 150 years thousands of people have found joy in St. Wenceslaus Church in prayerful union with God, and in such special times as those of baptism, First Communion and weddings. We are a community blessed with a heritage of faith in God. We are called to love God and to love one another. We share in Christ’s mission on earth. May God bless us as we celebrate 150 years and as we move on with our lives to a joyful eternity with Him.
